... GODDAMMIT TOM CRUISE. I WANT TO SEE GODDAMN WAR OF THE WORLDS AND NOW I CAN'T, BECAUSE I REFUSE TO PUT SO MUCH AS ONE-TENTH OF A CENT IN YOUR POCKET. FUCKER.
Would it help if I patted your shoulder reassuringly? We should just buy tickets to another movie and go see WoW instead. That way we get sci-fi goodness without giving money to the crazy Scientology bastards.
unless he is a prodcuer or is on the back of the film he isn't getting your money... very least not directly.
why specifically are you opposed to him. scientology is a faith, you wouldn't not go a movie if the actor was a baptist. i think lots of people have crazy ideas, he is just open with his.
and there are a lot of scientologists out there, scientollywood.com http://www.nndb.com/lists/278/000069071/
Point the first: Fair enough; he's not a producer, and admittedly I don't know to what extent actors get a percentage of theater ticket sales. But I'm pretty damn confident they do.
Point the second: Since Scientology has key earmarks of a cult, including isolation from family members and friends, collecting information on its members that could easily be used for blackmail (see here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/trollprincess/756224.html) for a list of questions that members are required to answer while connected to lie detectors) and an intense pressure to donate money to the church, I am unwilling to fund it.
Point the third: Although I have always irrationally hated Tom Cruise (with no sufficient explanation other than "his head is stupid"), the reason I have finally given in to that hatred, and will no longer be supporting him in any way, including watching or renting any movies with him in them, is because of his recent commentary on mental illness (transcript available here (http://youcantmakeitup.blogspot.com/2005/06/cruise-uncontrollable.html)). (His comments could be dismissed as ignorance combined with arrogance, but the Church of Scientology's official stance on psychiatry and psychiatric treatment -- that it is evil, and that no member of the church is allowed to seek it -- is flat-out dangerous to its members. Several people have died during their "program" for church members suffering from mental illness, which involves total isolation for an unspecified period of time.)
actors in general do not in general get back end revenue from the film. they definately do not from rental.
actually xenu.net is something you should really read. most religions are fairly open about their info... practices not exactly, but beliefs are often (not always) up front. the way that scientology treated aspects of religion like company secrets and sued the crap outta and viciously harassed anyone who critized them.
i have reason enough to dislike scientology, they do not like the gay.. and this is even after hubbard's gay son commited suicide(i assume this was before hubbard himself died) admitedly i only saw that published in one place.
your blogspot thingy is blocked, either it's cause i am not a member(nor want to be) or the winged lawyer monkeys already got to it.
cult or not(i saw yes, but i think lots of religions are cults, my own included) you are engaging in religious presecution. scientology saying that psychatrists are evil i on par an just as bad as birth control at all times is evil-a la catholics. will it grow sure because believe it or not people look to a new faith for some sort of psychological edge, and everyone what's at least to try the new model on, unless of course baised against it.
do i think it's scam, yes. do i think televangelists are a scam, but we're used to them, scientology is the other, and i think people's uncomfortablity with it tells more about the extent of christian bias in the coun try. ie, one of the writer's for the muppet babies slipped in scientology stuff, and my gut is disgust, feeling deceived, but someone's christian biases my attitude is much more 'eh'.
a lot of dangerous ideas exist in religions, you can try to give people a heads up, but they initially choose the cult and de-programing doesn't work so well if they are not willing. the book of mormon says straight up that god made evil people have dark skin(they have backed down on this somewhat) and all these creationists are passing wrapped twisted ideas of science that damages soceity and any future potential. the jehovah's witnesses were originally a doomsday cult (could be said of all christianity * ahem* revelations).
it's funny cruise's open scientology promoted a long discussion on the cepheid listserv.
i'll admit he feels slick like a used car salesman and has a galling over confidence. now to make you choke, nicole kidman was (is?) a scientologist- you liked moulin rouge right? ditto for travolta.
hating him for no reason strangely makes more confortable than a religious war.
scientology is just slightly more a mind fuck than a lot of new agey- astral projection- mind over body and/or self help methods/ hyponosis.
