OFFICIAL POST-HURRICANE STATEMENT

elsajeniRita was kinda disappointing, really. After all the drama and the trying to get out of town on 5 different routes and not being able to and packing all my stuff into my closet so it wouldn't get damaged if the windows broke... nothing happened. Zack and I both got a terrible night's sleep in the servery (sharing one bare dorm-bed mattress on the floor, which = uncomfortable, and surrounded by bright lights and people playing Halo), and most of the rest of Martel also spent the night in the servery, but I don't believe the storm ever got bad enough that we were officially required to be in the servery (which was our official evacuation area, since the windows were all boarded and there was plenty of space).
At Rice, there was virtually no rain and the highest gust recorded was around 65 mph; we never lost power. Around town, there are some branches down, streetlights out, power out in some areas, a few dangly power lines, and windows broken out on tall office buildings... but that's about it. The damage is worse in Galveston, and much worse a little ways to the east of us, but right here in town, we absolutely got off easy.
My house took no damage at all. My parents' plan was to sleep in the hall, which has no windows, with all the doors shut and the cat shut in with them; instead, my mom moved in there after being woken up by the wind around 3 a.m., but my dad refused to move with her, and she decided the cat might as well stay where she was (passed out from exhaustion under the dining room table after a long, difficult day of napping), all of which worked out fine. The worst damage on our property was a 3- or 4-foot branch, about one inch in diameter, that fell off our pecan tree. Around the neighborhood, it looks about the same: small branches down, sections of bark torn off of palm trees, and lots of people looking annoyed that they'd put up all that plywood and duct tape for nothing. The power didn't even go out.
I've got a ton of work to do, not to mention I'm exhausted from getting shitty sleep the last two nights, so I'm out for now. Just, everyone be reassured that whoever you're worried about in Houston is almost guaranteed okay.
