Exhausted, sunburnt to crispy, and probably awfully smelly, but lovin' it. Got back from camping on the Pedernales River (pronounced, of course, Per-dun-alice) this weekend. Slept in a tent with Katy, Gretchen, and little Sarah Jackson the first night (who isn't as little as she used to be, and has become disturbingly attractive, but we are noticeably not going to discuss that) and the same minus Katy the second. Got all reacquainted with the Pressley family. Tommy, Ben, and Sean all went out at the same time - all 15-year-old boys, mind you - driving their mothers' cars, all passed each other at various times on their drive around the park, and miraculously all survived anyway. I saw some of the most beautiful country I've ever had the fortune of seeing, especially just a bit southwest of Wimberley - there are some truly spectacular views there. Everything was very calm. Even the river seemed calm. (Seemed calm. It was actually much deeper than usual and had an insanely strong current, which meant that any time spent "swimming" in it was actually spent clutching at gigantic submerged rocks in hopes (generally vain ones) of not floating off downstream.) The rabbits were calm. The deer were unflappable. Even the armadilloes didn't seem too enthusiastic about running away. The only animal I saw that actually seemed creeped out by humans was a five-foot-long black racer snake, which took off like a shot when Candy, Sean, and I approached it on the nature trail.

I feel as if I roughed out whatever Bad was in me. I feel ready to deal with all my shit again. I'm really glad I went.

Not least because it produced various camping-related quotes that can only be thought of as hilarious if you've been sleeping on pointy rocks and nasty sunburns (in other words, not sleeping at all) in a half-completed tent (we had bits left over when we finished putting it up! how confidence-inducing is that?) for two nights, such as:
Me: That is one ugly tent the boys were sleeping in.
Katy: (pensively) It kind of reminds me of the Sydney Opera House.
Me: Um, why does everything remind you of the Sydney Opera House?

Classes started today at Rice, how thrilling. Some girl in my 10:00 class decided she wants to be my friend, which isn't too great as I don't especially want to be hers. There's a cute boy in my 9:00, though. (Although I think he's about 14. Oh well. Will cross that bridge when come to it.)

Sometime soon really must write up a description of my character's brother and send it to Nojh so he'll let me keep him. Apparently "he sort of reminds me of you" isn't good enough.
