Look, anything I try to write just now will be incoherent and moping and maudlin and weird, for a lot of reasons, and I'd rather not go into all of them, but one is that I saw Return of the King again, which I know is a pathetic reason to be incoherent and moping and maudlin and weird, but for me it seems to be a valid one.

So I'm only going to write about the hysterical portion of the evening, all right? When Becky and I went over to the Donahues' and played Cranium for, I don't know, an hour, and we did the worst charades the world has ever seen (but, in my own defense, I'd like to see you get someone to guess "Taming of the Shrew" through pure charades), and during the "Taming of the Shrew" portion of the evening, when Bert and I were standing next to each other both trying to communicate to our partners "Taming of the Shrew! Taming of the Shrew, dammit! No, shrew! Look! Rodent teeth!" and so forth (we had no luck getting them to come up with "Shakespeare," either, which would have at least been a start and a lot closer than where Becky was, which was, "Um, chariot races? Ben Hur?"), I eventually laughed so hard that I could no longer do charades or, in fact, stand up and ended up lying on the Donahues' kitchen floor, convulsing helplessly, while the timer ran down and still neither of them could figure out that we were trying to do Taming of the Shrew. (Althought admittedly I was no longer doing much to help with that. I don't think "Twitching Person On The Floor" and "Taming of the Shrew" have much in common, aside from both beginning with T.) Then Becky got "Richard Nixon" and tried to get me to guess "Watergate," which was all she could think of on short notice, and was utterly unsuccessful. ("Um... water... closet? I thought the category was Person...")

Incidentally, for purposes of historical and generally American-related charades and the bits where you have to hum songs, I think that, next time, the Englishwoman and the teenager should probably not be a team. (Of course neither of us can hum "Billie Jean," for God's sake, Becky's English and I was born in 1985.)
