Today we had brunch with my grandfather, who was actually a little less crabby and antisocial than he normally is. The woman he lives with (my step-grandmother, I guess? as far as I know they're not married, but they've been together at least 15 years, probably more, and it's not as if I ever met my "original" grandmother on this side) was, as usual, incredibly sweet. We are all slightly bewildered as to how in the world this pairing works, although we're pretty sure it helps that Helen is deaf as a post. That's a recent development, though. How on earth did they get along when she could still hear him complaining?

She's also starting to have more and more trouble remembering people, which is unfortunate and will probably get worse, but it's not that bad yet -- more a matter of "I know you people are Allen's family, but which one of you is his daughter, and which daughter are you, and who are all these damn kids?", and, in fairness, it's not as if we see each other often. In fact, I didn't see her or my grandfather at all from the time I was about six to the summer I was sixteen.

Every time I do see my grandfather, though, he's wearing the same thing: a cream-colored suit and matching hat. It's a fantastic suit, really. He may be a weird, cranky, generally unfriendly man (whom my father is rapidly becoming a clone of, and whom I will probably grow up to be exactly like as well), but at least he's a stylin' weird, cranky, generally unfriendly man.

Tomorrow: boating! And Alexandria Beetles, for real this time! (The game tonight was sold out. They have never, in the history of the team, sold out a game before. It was Dukes of Hazzard night and Rosco P. Coltrane was going to be there.)
