I got a catalog full of prom dresses in the mail the other day. Since then I've been flipping through it laughing at them, because most of them are truly laughable. And all of them have girls' names. On which topic:

Claudia just makes me think of the Babysitters' Club books from when I was, I don't know, 8. Katarina was the name that both Jennifer and I took on when we played Mafia last night. Gigi is actually a pretty good movie, if you're not the kind of person who freaks out about dated plots being sexist. Olivia was a girl I used to beat in harp competitions before she switched over to my teacher and joined our ensemble and Bonnie (the teacher) started telling me to pick up the slack because she was busy. Juliet was manipulative but smart. Emily needs to not be such a control freak when she's running an LRY meeting or lock-in or some such event. April was a girl in my elementary school show choir, and everyone thought she got solos because her mother was the dance teacher. Molly was a wonderfully perfectly brilliant girl who was in my class at Simon's Rock, and I miss her. Gwen actually called Emily to ask her why I always ride in the back seat when my mom's driving, it was bothering her so much. Chelsea was my competition for Ram the first summer we met him, and things got kind of violent in our cabin. Giselle is actually a very creepy ballet. Desiree is a girl I treated very badly when we were in the third grade, and I wish I hadn't. Margaux was a very sweet girl a few years younger than me in elementary school who always looked like she was about to cry. Cecilia was a girl at my middle school, and I'm not going to voice any kind of opinion of her right now. And Rhiannon -- the dress that's on the cover -- is a character in my novel and would not wear this dress even under pain of death.
