Hey, guys! Remember when I actually wrote stuff instead of posting about my Chinese notes?

October 1st: spider

It wasn't that she was afraid of spiders, exactly. She was certainly not going to be winning any "Arachnids' Biggest Fan" contests anytime soon, but she didn't generally run screaming from the room, either. The only real problem was the legs.

Nothing needed that many legs. This, she felt confident, she could state categorically. Anything that had that many legs was clearly just keeping some around as spares, in case some of them fell off, and given the sad state of most of the daddy-longlegs she'd seen in her life, that was probably not that unreasonable, but it was still unnecessary and probably unnatural.

On top of that, there had been that one summer at Girl Scout camp when a spider started down out of the rafters of their cabin in the middle of the night, when of course they were not asleep, but rather wide awake and trying to strike a balance between talking about boys and not talking about boys loudly enough to wake the counselors. By the time their shrieking had summoned a counselor anyway, the spider was gone, and she had said it probably wasn't a black widow, but they were fairly sure that was just because she wanted them to shut up and let her get back to bed.

All things considered, she felt she had reacted fairly well to the thousand or so spiders boiling up out of the drain in the kitchen sink.

The plumber had been utterly unable to help. They'd all been gone by the time he got there, anyway. She'd tried calling the exterminator instead, but it turned out she was in Pennsylvania for her sister's wedding and wouldn't be back for a week.

(Note: I'm kind of glad I ran out of time when I did on this one, because I have NO IDEA where the spiders came from.)
